Born and raised in Tokyo, Japan, Rintaro Nishimura is a Senior Associate with The Asia Group’s Japan practice.

He graduated in May 2024 with an MA in Asian Studies from Georgetown University’s Walsh School of Foreign Service. He writes on international relations in Northeast Asia, mostly focusing on Japan’s foreign and security policy.

Rintaro’s articles have appeared in Georgetown Journal of Asian Affairs, Nikkei Asia, The Japan Times, The Interpreter, Global Asia Forum, Korea Times, The National Interest, The Diplomat, Tokyo Review, and the Asia Tech Observer. He has been quoted in the BBC, Bloomberg, Reuters, Nikkei Asia, South China Morning Post, Financial Times, Kyodo News, AP News, La Stampa, Corriere Della Sera, ABC Radio Australia, and Taiwan Plus. His current research interests are focused on Japan’s Indo-Pacific strategy and the geoeconomics of the region. In his spare time, he publishes a weekly newsletter on Japanese domestic politics and economic/tech developments.

He recently participated as a Japanese delegate in the US-ROK-Japan Trilateral Global Leadership Youth Summit, organized by the East-West Center, the U.S. Embassies in Seoul and Tokyo, and the South Korean Ministry of Education, held from July 11 to 13, 2024, in Busan, South Korea.

He is the proud co-founder of the U.S.-ROK-Japan Trilateral Next-Gen Study Group, a platform for young professionals to regularly discuss issues pertaining to the trilateral relationship.
